Now, as for where Odyssey stands in the great pantheon of Super Mario games, that’s a tough one. After that, the one-two punch of Breath of the Wild and Odyssey really set the system alight.
From its early March release until late October, the system was ploughing forward without a big first-party exclusive to its name (the quirky ARMS and such being the extent of it). What changed? Super Mario Odyssey arrived, that’s what changed. With all of the controversy around the embarrassing failure of Wii U, the Switch was a tough sell for many at first. It launched at an odd time of year, without a true killer app (beyond The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which was also available for Wii U). Super fans will be happy to learn that the title’s celebrated soundtrack is now available for purchase.Īs well as the Switch is doing for itself just now, early signs were not so positive.
Lake Lamode (which feels like a mix of Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy music).Īctually, typing this up was good to remind myself that I need to buy Odyssey's OST asap, alongside Xenoblade 2's OST.Super Mario Odyssey, jewel in Nintendo Switch’s software crown, is the best-selling game to hit the system to date. Mollusque-Lanceur Battle Theme (which gave me strong Mario Sunshine vibes) RoboBrood Battle Theme (the melody of this one is so strong, I love it) Ruined Dragon Battle Theme (sounds kinda scary for a "regular" Mario boss) Honeylune Ridge Cave (it reminds me of the Super Mario World final boss theme) Bubblaine (this music is so good I feel relaxed just thinking about it) Melancholy Bubblaine (straight out of Majora's Mask) Both themes in Bowser's Castle (the buildup is sooooooo good) Mount Volbono Town/Plaza (reminds me of a big family reunion for lunch on a sunny sunday) Some of the tracks that got stuck in my head in addition to the ones you mentioned: I also can't agree with that last bit at all. I was so glad when they went back to having variety with Odyssey on that front. It's so limiting to the soundtrack that it's frustrating. Not because it's necessarily bad - I don't think it is, but it definitely felt lackluster to me, with only a few standouts - but because focusing just on big band is an idea I really hate for mainline Mario soundtracks. I actually really dislike 3D World's soundtrack. Not any of these were able to pop out at me.
Went on to play Super Mario 3D World and the big band jazz feel of the game was so well orchestrated and it fit so perfectly with the game's classic feel. Was playing some Super Mario Galaxy earlier today and pretty much ever track in that game had some sense of whimsy and wonder.
